Each angry outburst, each moment of rage, might be less about the present and more about guarding old, unhealed scars.

Anger can be triggered by:
* Perceived injustice or unfairness
* A sense of threat
* Hurt from our needs not being met
* Belief that important rules have been broken

How angry we get is influenced by our interpretation of the event or trigger that cased the anger. Anger is most likely in close relationships - partners, friends, work colleagues - we can have high expectations and needs for these relationships. When these are not met we feel hurt and angry.

When we get angry our bodies mobilise for defence or attack. Our muscles tighten, blood pressure increases, and heart rate increases. We can misinterpret other people’s intentions in a personal and negative way. We label them and can interpret their actions as proof of this label.

Recognising triggers and the early warning signs of anger can help you to better regulate and control the emotion. Healing old trauma wounds and self-compassion can also be routes towards better anger management.

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a result of repeated, prolonged exposure to traumatic events. Traumatic experiences are those that are overwhelming, invoke intense negative emotions, and involve some degree of loss of control and/or vulnerability. The experience of trauma is subjective.

In adults, C-PTSD symptoms can include Intrusive Memories, Emotional Dysregulation, Avoidance Symptoms, Dissociation, Interpersonal Problems, Cognitive Distortions, and Health Problems.

Emotional dysregulation is when you struggle to manage your emotions—basically, your feelings can go from 0 to 100 real quick, and it’s hard to bring them back down. This can be a common symptom of trauma because trauma messes with how our brain processes and controls emotions.

What does it look like? Think sudden outbursts, feeling overly anxious or sad, mood swings, or shutting down emotionally. It can feel like you’re constantly on edge or like you’re riding an emotional rollercoaster without a seatbelt.

Healing starts with self-awareness and self-compassion. Trauma-focused therapy can help. Mindfulness and grounding techniques also teach you how to pause and regulate when emotions spike. It’s about learning how to create space between the trigger and the reaction. Be patient with yourself—healing takes time. You’re not broken, you’re just in the process of healing.

Intrusive memories includes flashbacks and nightmares in addition to uncomfortable body sensations and pain. They can be triggered by any of the senses and can be one of the most challenging symptoms of trauma. Recognising that intrusive memories are a result of trauma can help you take the first step towards processing them. Other useful tools include the Rewind technique which is an imaginal exposure treatment that offers ‘closure without disclosure’. It can help stop the involuntary recall and restore functioning.

Avoidant strategies for dealing with childhood trauma try to minimise awareness of the need for comfort and connection. It’s shaped by two contradictory internal working models....

1) Conscious model. Involves a sense that the self is good and strong while others are untrustworthy, needy and inadequate.

2) Unconscious model. Involves a disturbing sense that the self is flawed, dependent and helpless while others are rejecting, controlling and punitive.

Avoidant strategies support the first model as a defence against the second.

Avoidant strategies arise in childhood as a result of caregivers who were emotionally unavailable in a way that left them feeling unloved or rejected. The child learns to supress their emotions

As adults they may justify the emotional isolation of their childhoods as fostering self-sufficiency and determination. However, adults with unresolved avoidant strategies will often pass those strategies onto their children. It’s time to break the cycle. Let’s normalise talking about emotions and trauma.
